Sanford Support

October 26, 2021

I had an interview with Mrs.Sanford, who owns Sanford Support Systems. Before the beginning the interview she showed me around the building and explained the reasons for each of the rooms, some of which included a yoga room and a play therapy room. I really enjoyed talking with Mrs.Sanford. She seems very passionate about helping others, and you can tell she builds the therapy around the person. Mrs.Sanford explained that one of the most rewarding parts of being a therapist is seeing her patients start to figure things out and break down their walls. We talked a lot about societal culture and pressures as well as stigmas surrounding eating disorders. Society and media promote diet culture and ideal body types, which tend to have a negative effect on the public, and cause many people to develop unhealthy eating habits. She recommended that I read Mothers, Daughters, and Body Image by Hillary McBride, and The Body is Not an Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor, as well as watch the documentary Miss Representation due to their reputation for calling out what needs to be changed in our society in order to make it a better place for people who are struggling. Mrs.Sanford also expressed the importance of equality when it comes to the awareness regarding mental health and mental illnesses.
